Warm Elderberry Herbal Tea Recipe

A warm mug of herbal tea is one of the simplest ways to enjoy Clariberry syrup. This five-minute recipe pairs its berry, honey, lemon and cinnamon flavours with a caffeine-free tea.

Quick recipe

  • Yield: 1 mug
  • Prep time: 5 minutes
  • Best tea choices: Rooibos, peppermint or ginger

Ingredients

  • 1 caffeine-free herbal tea bag, such as rooibos, peppermint or ginger
  • 1 cup (250 mL) hot water
  • 1 tablespoon (15 mL) Clariberry Elderberry Syrup
  • Lemon slice, optional
  • Cinnamon stick, optional

How to make elderberry herbal tea

  1. Place the herbal tea bag in a mug and pour in the hot water.
  2. Steep for 4 to 5 minutes, or according to the package directions.

  4. Stir in the elderberry syrup.
  5. Add a lemon slice or cinnamon stick, if you like, and enjoy warm.

Tips and variations

  • Adjust to taste: Start with 2 teaspoons of syrup for a lighter flavour or use up to 1½ tablespoons.
  • Serve it cold: Let the brewed tea cool, pour over ice and then stir in the syrup.
  • Keep it simple: Clariberry already contains Ontario honey, lemon and cinnamon, so extra sweetener is usually unnecessary.
  • Protect the flavour: Stir the syrup into the brewed tea instead of boiling it directly.

Storage note

What Is Elderberry Syrup Used For? Food & Drink Ideas

Small girl with faceprinting poses with a bottle of Clariberry Elderberry Syrup.

Updated September 24, 2026 · By the Clariberry team

Elderberry syrup is a simple way to add berry flavour and sweetness to food and drinks. With Clariberry, the berry taste is balanced by Ontario honey, lemon and cinnamon.

Start with a small amount, taste and adjust. The suggestions below are recipes and serving ideas, not medicinal doses.

1. Stir it into herbal tea

Prepare your favourite herbal tea, let it reach a comfortable drinking temperature, then stir in a little syrup. Taste before adding another sweetener: Clariberry already contains honey. Lemon or ginger tea makes a simple starting point.

2. Make an elderberry spritz

Fill a glass with ice, add a small splash of syrup and top with sparkling water. Stir gently and add a squeeze of lemon if you like a brighter finish. Adjust the syrup-to-water ratio to your preference. The result is an easy alcohol-free drink for lunch or a relaxed evening.

3. Drizzle over plain yogurt

Add a little syrup to plain yogurt and stir it through, or leave it as a berry swirl. Pair with oats, granola or fruit you already enjoy. Add the syrup just before serving so you can control the sweetness of each bowl.

4. Finish oatmeal or pancakes

Use elderberry syrup as a finishing drizzle once breakfast is ready. Its berry and cinnamon notes offer a different flavour from maple syrup. Start with less than you usually pour, then add more after tasting.

5. Add it to a smoothie

Blend a small splash into a smoothie when you want a little more berry flavour. Because it is already sweetened with honey, taste the smoothie before adding other sweeteners. This is a flavouring choice, not a substitute for the fruit or other foods in your recipe.

6. Build an alcohol-free mocktail

Use syrup, sparkling water and citrus as a base, then experiment with a garnish such as a lemon slice or fresh mint. Add fizzy ingredients last and stir gently. For a group, mix the non-carbonated ingredients first and add sparkling water by the glass.

Choose a syrup that suits the recipe

Read the ingredient list: elderberry syrups vary in sweetness, added herbs and intended use. Clariberry has four ingredients—elderberry juice, Ontario honey, lemon juice and cinnamon—and is sold as a food. It contains honey, so it is not vegan and is not for children under 12 months.

Store your bottle between servings

Our current bottles have a six-month unopened shelf life. Refrigerate after opening and follow the bottle label. Read our storage guide for the distinction between current shelf-stable bottles and older refrigerated batches.

Can Elderberries Prevent a Cold? Understanding the Evidence

feeling unwell, catching cold, flu and temperature, looking

Updated September 24, 2026 · By the Clariberry team

There is not enough evidence to say that elderberry prevents colds. Research on specific extracts also cannot be used to claim that Clariberry syrup prevents or treats illness.

Clariberry is sold as a food and is not a licensed natural health product. This page updates an older article that drew broader conclusions from the research than the evidence supports.

Prevention and symptom research are different questions

A study of symptoms in people who are already ill does not show that a product prevents infection. Likewise, a result for a particular preparation or dose cannot automatically be applied to a different recipe. These distinctions matter when reading headlines about elderberry.

The overall evidence remains limited

The NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health describes only a small number of studies on elderberry and respiratory infections. It does not establish broad health benefits or justify treating elderberry foods as medicine.

Source: NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health: Elderberry.

Individual studies can produce different results

A randomized placebo-controlled trial published in 2020 did not find a benefit in its primary outcome for patients with influenza. This is one reason to read the overall evidence rather than rely on a single positive headline. The trial did not test Clariberry.

Read the randomized influenza trial in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.

What this means for Clariberry

We offer a syrup for its flavour and ingredients: elderberry juice, Ontario honey, lemon juice and cinnamon. We do not recommend a medicinal dose or claim that it boosts immunity or prevents, treats or cures colds or flu.

When to seek advice

Speak with a healthcare professional about illness prevention, symptoms or treatment. If you take medication, are pregnant or are breastfeeding, ask before using elderberry for a health purpose. Products containing honey must not be given to children under 12 months.

What Is Elderberry Syrup? Ingredients & Buying Guide

Updated September 24, 2026 · By the Clariberry team

Elderberry syrup is a sweetened preparation made with elderberries. Recipes vary: some are made for food and drinks, while other products are sold with specific medicinal directions. Read the label to understand the product you are choosing.

What is in Clariberry?

Our recipe uses elderberry juice, Ontario honey, lemon juice and cinnamon. The berries provide a rich, gently tart flavour; honey balances the tartness; lemon adds brightness; cinnamon brings a little warmth. We make it in Ontario with locally sourced elderberries and honey from Ontario beekeepers.

Clariberry is sold as a food. Our serving ideas are ways to enjoy its flavour, not a medicinal dose. We do not make illness-prevention or treatment claims for the syrup.

Five things to check before buying elderberry syrup

  1. Ingredients: look at the actual ingredient list, including sweeteners and any added herbs.
  2. Bottle size: compare the amount you receive as well as the price. Clariberry is sold in 8 oz bottles.
  3. Storage: check whether refrigeration is required before opening and what to do afterward. Follow the bottle-specific instructions.
  4. Delivery: enter your address to check shipping availability and the full cost before paying.
  5. Intended use: do not assume research or directions for one extract or medicinal product apply to every syrup.

How do you use it?

Stir a little into herbal tea, drizzle over yogurt or breakfast foods, or mix with sparkling water and lemon. Start with a small amount and adjust to taste. See our food and drink ideas for more combinations.

How does Clariberry keep?

Current bottles are hot-bottled for shelf stability and have a six-month unopened shelf life. Refrigerate after opening. Older bottles carrying refrigerated-storage instructions should still be stored according to their own labels. Our storage guide explains the change.

Buying online in Canada

Order Clariberry online for shipping across Canada or choose free local pickup in Oshawa (Columbus). Current multi-buy savings appear automatically in the cart. Our shipping page explains delivery estimates and free-shipping thresholds.

Contains honey: not for children under 12 months. It is not vegan or sugar-free.

Elderberry Syrup: Flavour, Ingredients & Research Limits

Updated September 24, 2026 · By the Clariberry team

This article replaces an older discussion of health benefits. Clariberry is sold as a food, not a licensed natural health product. We do not claim that our syrup boosts immunity or prevents, treats or cures illness.

What our syrup brings to the table

Clariberry brings berry flavour, honey sweetness, lemon and warming cinnamon to everyday food and drinks. Those are the reasons we suggest it for tea, yogurt, oatmeal or a sparkling-water spritz. See our culinary serving ideas.

Ingredients are not proof of a health effect

Elderberries have been studied for a number of potential effects, but a plant ingredient, a laboratory result and a finished food are different things. Research about a particular extract or dose does not establish that a bottle of Clariberry produces the same effects. We do not present laboratory findings as health benefits of our syrup.

What the evidence can and cannot tell us

The NIH overview describes a small body of research on elderberry and respiratory symptoms, with insufficient information for many other proposed uses. It is not evidence that Clariberry prevents colds, supports heart health, relieves allergies or improves skin. Our previous broad statements should not be used to make health decisions.

Source: NIH National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health: Elderberry.

Read the product label

Compare the ingredients, intended use and storage directions of the product you are considering. Clariberry contains elderberry juice, Ontario honey, lemon juice and cinnamon. It contains honey and must not be given to children under 12 months.

Our current bottles are shelf-stable unopened for six months; refrigerate after opening. Read our storage guide and follow the instructions on your bottle.

For health questions

If you are considering elderberry for a health purpose, speak with a qualified healthcare professional, particularly if you take medication, are pregnant or are breastfeeding. A food or a web article should not replace medical care.
